Catfish – someone who uses a fake profile to “lure (someone) into a relationship by means of a fictional online persona.”

I’ve noticed a sharp increase in friend requests lately, maybe it is my hot profile photo, or maybe it is the quarantine and people are trying to connect, OR maybe some of them are Catfish.

Connecting and being too trusting in the online world can be dangerous or crazy (if you need background research check out the TV show by the same name).

While I have gotten plenty of legit requests to become friends, I have caught a few catfish along the way. So I thought it may be a good time to share a few tips on how to spot a fake profile.

Malware Fox has a few tips for evaluating a friend request, read Spot Fake Facebook Profile and before you say yes:

  1. Check the profile picture
  2. Read the About Section
  3. Who’s on the friend list?
  4. Name in URL and Profile the same?
  5. Review the timeline
  6. Conversations on the page?
